Brilliant Tranquility

The thunderstorms of this spring
Won’t let us go effortlessly.
Everything grows around heaven, and heaven grows.
The pine forest is dense.
The growth is entangled.
Save the heaven, in a bleak autumn. Let the crops be squandered on the land this year.
I won’t reap.
Save the heaven, remain personally on the scene.
Autumn is singing, full of hometown lights on the face.
The thunderstorms of this spring won’t let us go effortlessly.

Firefly

Moth was dying beside a candle
Candle was extinguished by wind

Blue tinted light
Foggy light and chilly light

Would never be buried in rainy night
Oh, I should sing songs for you
You own lighthouse

When I was little

When I was little,
I didn’t recognize words,
Mother was the library.
I was reading mother —

One day
The world will be in peace,
people can fly…..
Barleys will grow out of snowy land…..
Money will be useless……

Gold will be used as bricks to build houses,
paper money will be used for origami,
coins will be for skimming water……

I want to be a wandering boy,
Carry a golden apple,
a silver hair candle
and a red flamingo flying over from the country of Egypt,
travel to a fairytale kingdom,
propose to the Candy City princess……

But mother told me
“You need to work now.”

Passing the front door of Jing Shan
— Thinking of that old locust tree

You were so lucky
Witnessed an emperor’s trembling

You were so buoyant
Could tolerate seeing an emperor getting into a ring

You were so atrocious
Dared to hang an emperor

You were such a courageous hero
A prisoner who would never run away

Major Cold

The freezing cold days are coming
With your overflowing innocent wisdom
You weave the ice flowers and snowflakes
Into a crystal crown glittering
Being put on your pure and broad forehead
—— What more are you meditating?

The freezing cold days are staying
With the tenderness you face cruelty
The frost has frozen your hair straight
You take them as musical strings
Playing the mournfully sad tune
Breaking the silence of death
—— What more are you meditating?

The ice crown glistens and the frozen strings play
You gently close the mild eyelids
A ray of thought rises from the brow
Getting directly to Buddha’s temple
Asking to bring life to the ice flowers
And give a human voice to the frozen strings
—— What more are you meditating?

The Meditation by Keats’s Tomb

Is your name written with or in water?
O, how time flies by and never comes back,
All your belongings that decay so fast
Are buried here, away from the noisy crowd,

While all the immortal poems you created
Lie in the heart of “truth” and spirit of “beauty”,
Leaving us a holy altar and a pure land,
Where the song of the nightingale never fades.

I wander by your tomb, picking up a green leave——
Symbol of your poem, pressing it against my chest,
To feel the eternal nature fed by the flowing water.

Meditating at your tomb, I sink into a dream:
The great Neptune riding steeds over the waves,
And you are a drop of glittering tear on the top.

Rain after Wildfire
— Bancroft, Ontario

Rain stretches the dusk, absorbs smoke.
Wind-borne sparks hiss, fizzle
among spiky balsam silhouettes.

On the unassumed marsh road
my husband slows for
—a black dog? No, bear,
stocky, lumbering, galloping
from our engine growl.
I am glad it runs. When
does the spring hunt begin?

Rain closes its mesh curtain,
a dark-cloaked cow moose
watches from the spruce bog.
Pavement whispers our passage;
the copper-penny scent, wet earth,
wafts through the window crack.

A dog-fox, tall on his legs,
waits on the gravel verge,
a chipmunk limp in his jaws.
Rain sculpts tendons,
in his chest and shoulders,
slicks fur to his skull.

I unroll the window to let the rain
soak my pelt of hair,
weigh down my fleece coat.
The rough, cool tongue of forest
washes my face.

柏油路輕聲傳遞我們的行進;

The Sistine Chapel by DC Reid

cry, voice that’s outgrown it: true, you would cry pure as a bird,
when the season lifts him, the ascending one, almost forgetting
that he is a suffering creature, and not just a solitary heart
that it flings into brightness, to intimate heavens. Like him,
~ Duino Elegies – Rainer Maria Rilke

Cry, voice that’s outgrown it: true, you would cry pure as a bird.
I have outgrown love, but not the mesh of legs. The word
brings us into one, or breaks apart a bleeding heart,
as a girl would do, break a flower to its sword
that needs be handled gently, for bringing it within her
takes the guidance of a passionate hand. Sex, as I say,
is not love, nor the boy-loving Christians ruled by a cleric
in a golden cap, one that sent his men to children all the
world round, but mostly boys with their beautiful unbroken
voices. Oh it makes man weep in his silent cell

when the season lifts him. The ascending one, almost forgetting
behind his screen the hand that holds the organ piping
hands out Hail Marys while Her spirit gives
him little boys as pure as candles lighting.
Terrible angels inhabit the sparrow places, the browning
joists and rafter trusses. The waxy smudge may
still be rubbed by a deft and intimate hand.
O Michelangelo the years you spent painting on your
back, six inches from the ceiling. The boy priest lies in a
cell with a broken moon, and the promise

that he is a suffering creature, and not just a solitary heart.
There can be no doubt, but punishment is not a part
of penitence for that comes long after crime, and there is not
just one but South America plumes of Indians, the desert
of Africa, all the O’Tooles and why not Camelot? And
had Narvaez taken tooth to Cook, the North Americas.
Guilt is the achievement of the princes of the boys
lying on their faces smushed into heights of little voices.
A swallow in its scribble delights the little boy
six floors above the floor, in Borgia waiting room

that it flings into brightness, to intimate heavens. Like him,
the smallest beast of air. The candle wax rubbed to make him
smooth and quiet where the surplice hides and bishop’s toque
calls into the long night for a paradise lost to them.
He or the pure She cries into the Earth to bring forth
creaking nails from caskets. The smallened bones
were laid and never returned to dust to ashes
for within the wooden coffins the shrivel found
them, for it had found them in life. The boy priests
live with death because they are death.

After Zhang Ziqing by Jim Cohn

It was I, myself, who put my mind in bondage.
I understand that what is past cannot be undone.
That wrong road I took yesterday is right today.
Asking about the way ahead only disturbs the view.
How can these cramped quarters feel so spacious?
If again I leave, what would I be seeking?
Clouds float by from over the mountaintops.
Shadows darken as the sun sets behind them.
As before, all of creation follows the seasons.
I am moved by my life going its full cycle.

One Way Trip in Life
 By Zhang Ziqing

Life is a one-way trip
And you never know when to complete it,
But one thing I know for sure,
The longer you travel on it
The lonelier you will get,
’Cos your co-travelers
Get fewer and fewer.

Night Rain in Chengdu

You always bring my favorite autumn rain
To greet my arrival
Were it not for a friend who held an umbrella
I would rather stand in the rain to be a withered flower
I have prepared my wealth for you
But the light of your star has been wet
I hand you a drawing of the design
But your streets have been filled with water

I always think about Du Fu’s thatched cottage
What will it be like in autumn wind and rain
How I want to open the curtain of autumn rain
Look at the night piece in the capital of leisure
Remembering the days as blue as poetry
It must have been a hundred years ago

Worldly Windows

In a world that is filled
with walls, be a door.
Keep on breathing even
if you think you can’t take it anymore.

Where there are only
bricks and mud, carve windows.
In the coldness of the night,
be the flaming light.

You will approach conflict,
but you can choose your fights.
When existence seems like a free fall,
remember to bounce.

If you have the choice,
choose laughter over tears.
Though you cannot see,
take a step beyond your fears.

Do not hold your own
chains in place.
You must act
with kindness and grace.

You must run towards the wild
for it will set you free.
You must be the source of love
if you wish to find peace.

Stay

It is my hope
that we can all find a way
to live in peace.

We must all
work towards that day
starting right now.

Every human belongs in this land—
every color, straight or gay,
having faith or professing none,
right here you must all stay.

Rich or poor,
this is freedom’s door.
We must find a better way.
Stop fighting all these wars.
Provide what we all need.
Stop living just for greed.

Understand each other’s views.
Pay attention to the news.
Learn to talk, and to debate.
Let experience educate.
Arise to a higher fate.
We were not meant to live in hate.

Love your neighbor before it’s too late.
Take care of each other.
We’re all mates.
Most of all, dear friends, stay safe.

Marriage by Günter Wilhelm Grass
English Tr. by Michael Hamburger

We have children, that count up to two.
We usually go to different films.
It’s friends who talk of our drifting apart.
But your interests and mine
still touch, at the same points always.
Not only the question about cufflinks.
Little services, too:
Just hold that mirror.
Change the bulbs.
Fetch something.
Or discussions, till everything is discussed.
Two stations that at times
are both tuned in to receive.
Shall I turn myself off?
Exhaustion simulates harmony.
What do we owe each other? That.
I don’t like that — your hairs in the john.
But after eleven years the thing is still fun.
To be one flesh when prices fluctuate.
We think thriftily, in small coin.
In the dark you believe all I say.
Unpicking and knitting anew.
A stretched cautiousness.
Saying thank you.
Pull yourself together.
That lawn of yours in our garden.
Now you’re being ironic again.
Why don’t you laugh about it?
Clear out, then, if you can.
Our hatred is weatherproof.
But sometimes, distrait, we are tender.
The children’s reports
have to be signed.
We deduct each other from income tax.
Not till the day after tomorrow will it be over.
You. Yes, you. Don’t smoke so much.

Open Wardrobe by Günter Wilhelm Grass
English Tr. by Michael Hamburger

The shoes are at the bottom.
They are afraid of a beetle
on the way out,
of a penny on the way back,
of a beetle and a penny on which they might tread
till it impresses itself.
At the top is the home of the headgear.
Take heed, be wary, not headstrong.
Incredible feathers,
what was the bird called,
where did its eyes roll
when it knew that its wings were too gaudy?
The white balls asleep in the pockets
dream of moths.
Here a button is missing,
in this belt the snake grows weary.
Doleful silk,
asters becoming a dress.
Every Sunday filled with flesh
and the salt of creased linen.
Before the wardrobe falls silent, turns into wood,
a distant relation of pine trees —
who will wear the coat
one day when you’re dead?
Who move his arm in the sleeve,
anticipate every movement?
Who will turn up the collar,
stop in front of the pictures
and be alone under the windy cloche?

也顯不出一點兒驚慌;

Butterflies Over the Sea

Over the decades, I’ve encountered numerous inscrutable miracles.

—Inscription

People will say:
What can fly over the sea
Must have strong wings,
Venture to battle against the thunderstorm.

However, I have witnessed
(Absolutely true!)
A few tiny yellow butterflies
Over the vast waves of the Bohai Bay.
Instead of flying along the shore,
They are flying towards the sea far far away.
Up and down go they
Like sturdy marine lives.

The tiny yellow butterflies
Flicker like flames,
Unlikely to be getting lost,
Showing no sign of panic.
They fly farther and farther away,
As the coast disappears gradually.

Little butterflies,
Why don’t you turn back?

The Night

Close the doors and windows tightly.
I believe the darkness won’t enter again.

I light the lamp.

But the darkness is a pack of wolves
Still lurking at my door.

I hear thousands of claws
keep tearing my windows.

The lamp is trembling.
In the restless light I write poems.

Poetry never trembles!

Almost Out of Sky

Almost out of the sky, half of the moon
anchors between two mountains.
Turning, wandering night, the digger of eyes.
Let’s see how many stars are smashed in the pool.
It makes a cross of mourning between my eyes, and runs
away.
Forge of blue metals, nights of stilled combats,
my heart revolves like a crazy wheel.
Girl who have from so far, brought me so far,
sometimes you glance flashes out under the sky.
Rumbling, storm, cyclone of fury,
you cross above my heart without stopping.
Wind from the tombs carries off, wrecks, scatters your sleepy
root.
The big trees on the other side of her, uprooted.
But you, cloudless girl, question of smoke, corn tassel.
You were what the wind was making with illuminated leaves.
Behind the nocturnal mountains, white lily of conflagration,
ah, I can say nothing! You were made of everything.
Longing that sliced my breast into pieces,
it is time to take another road, on which she does not smile.
Storm that buried the bells, muddy swirl of torments,
why touch her now, why make her sad.
Oh to follow the road that leads away from everything,
without anguish, death, winter waiting along it
with their eyes open through the dew.

Your breast is enough

Your breast is enough for my heart
And my wings for your freedom
What was sleeping above your soul will rise
Out of my mouth to heaven
In you is the illusion of each day
You arrive like the dew to the cupped flowers
You undermine the horizon with your absence
Eternally in flight like the wave
I have said that you sang in the wind
Like the pines and like the masts
Like them, you are tall and taciturn
And you are sad, all at once, like a voyage
You gather things to you like an old road
You are peopled with echoes and nostalgic voices
I awoke and at times birds fled and migrated
That had been sleeping in your soul

Yet
By Les Wicks

Seeds. Everywhere amongst the careless char
so deep in the rubble
as insignificant as hope. Seeds.
A filthy rain shakes itself clean.
Those few eyes left see desolation
but seeds have begun to burrow with the runoff.
Fungus… hyphae spread out beneath ground
the size of a village grid, this mycelium
sensing rebirth
reaches up towards
what is still a diffuse
promise of light.
The next shower will be cleaner
sprouts rise in a timid applause.
From burnt bark the hardiest grubs emerge from their burrows,
squint upon emergence as all born things have done across eons.
Crows veer down from the peaks towards
carrion revealed beneath denuded trees.
From 8000 metres below sea level

the braver snailfish rise
amidst an inexplicable bounty beneath the ocean’s skin.
Life has had it worse before
& plans anew in a world fresh-scoured.

Raw Like Sandpaper
By Lou Steer

Be abrasive.
Be that little piece of grit
that wears a hole in the sole of your shoe.
Be that bird whose beak grinds down a mountain
in a hundred years.
Be a piece of garnet hardened sandpaper,
rub off the rough edges,
smooth the way for the hand to move sensuously
over the polished curves that abrasive paper revealed.
Be a diamond crusted file hidden in a loaf of bread.
Use it to carve your way out of your prison of despair.
Leave a trail of crumbs behind you to show others the way out.
Be determined to abrade away
all those things that get in your way,
that stop you from being the person you want to be,
from making the changes you want to see in the world,
the obstacles, rough spots, knots and tangles.
Be the smooth surface polished to mirror clear perfection
so that you reflect all you see,
show it back to the world.
Be abrasive.
Be rough, be raw.

Be ready.

The Crushed Pill — Powdered Snow

Daddy, the snow is a powder in my memory,
It’s a pill you crushed before I went to bed.
“Taking it with water,” you said, “The invisible enemies will fall back and
No one will miss them. The jubilation of
the King will shine at dawn with the Golden Sun!”
Father, the snowpowder is pouring down fast,
Their tracks are crushing the good pills.
Flying from their launching bomb’s points,
They land, destroying large swaths of birch trees.
They ruin and crush walls in streets and alleys,
Their cannon fodders sucked blood and left tears
Dripping and forming ice—such a faint sight!
Father, the 2022nd time train is empty on arrival,
Spring didn’t arrive at Kyiv’s platform as expected.
And winter’s coldness occupies passengers’ seats,
The bone-chilling waters of Dnieper’s river leave wounds.
Bandages are cherry red converted and left from,
The messy white lace curtains of shattered windows.
A red horse is neighing* from being—stuck in the snow.
Daddy, you said, “Minor loneliness will go away in a few days.”
But the sunflowers are suddenly falling, and…
The frostbitten feet are lost and wandering in all directions, Corpses are growing under the Javelin Bombs' impact, Shadows get longer, and wonder—“How long will it take?”
Under the darkened once starry sky of wind’s strings,
They are torn apart with sounds of sobbing and dripping tears.
Father, in my dreams last night I had a vision—clear and true!
I saw the horseman in fine white linen moving hurriedly, Wearing a crown and having a bow—his white horse galloping, Sounds of your voice I heard loudly—whispering to me!
“Still, I love shedding my innocent light—my blood for thee!”
Daddy, I am still worried, When will the snow bombs end?
People are ready to head for Saint Sophia&apos’s Cathedral
Will they miss the morning prayer bell?
The new season of sunlight green growing branches?
Will they cry or give praise for their lost baby granddaughter‘s cot?
“Ouch!—Father”

The place of Skulls

One crow, perched on the gallows, oversees the folly.
Still daylight—long shadows of a low sun—
The visible hides the visible.
Somewhere constellations turn like millstones.
After the body’s hauled down, the tree resumes
Its life as a tree: blossoming in season, bearing fruit.

Ritual

Each year, a garland-crowned goat is driven into the wilderness.
Repetition is an aid to memory.

A garland-crowned goat, driven into the wilderness,
Takes with it the burden of its sacrifice.

Each year we drive out the garland-crowned goat.
The goat makes a last meal of its crown.

The Calling of the Elect to Heaven

Next to where nettles grow in the vacant lot,
Drawers, left open and empty in a dresser,
Warp, half-filled with rain. The low sky is ashen.
Although workers climbed down years ago, a grid
Of poles and planks still scaffolds the church steeple.
No one pulls the rope slumped over its pulley.
No one can recall the last hour sounded.
My breath, as I lean close, darkens the window.
Only nails on the walls where pictures once hung.
