The curve of its sideways divides the light and dark
The stairs drop one by one
Someone must have arrived there first
So many eyes are looking up
“Please those people who embraced the darkness
come with me”

A Room with a View

At last, outside my window an expanse
For the mind’s elbows, stretching north and south
Houseboats and towers, drydocks and seaplanes
Streets vaulting over hillsides
And the top of the sky pushed backward
through the cloud
Then over high bridges into the distance
Where the sun is breaking, falling
beyond the mountains

In the darkness, blazing like campfirese
locked in glass,
The lights from other houses
Survive the invisible weather of the night
I watch through the dawn
Cars butting each other
down long chutes to the city
And the black-decked seiner circling the inlet
Dragging its purse behind, then slewing away
With the morning offering,
leaving the water empty

A Road Appears At The End Of View
Tr. by Sophy Chen

It is not an accident that
a road suddenly appeared

In the shining sun of spring
Like a beautiful body
Taking off its vulgar powder
An reappearing from all things
A road is as white as jade, in sorrow and joy
Everything is retreating
The boat waiting at the ferry,
is releasing the cable

Ladder Tr. by Sophy Chen

The curve of its sideways
divides the light and dark
The stairs drop one by one
Someone must have arrived there first
So many eyes are looking up
“Please those people who embraced the darkness
come with me”

People get up from the wilderness
Get up from the bustling land
Get up from books
The old man gets up like a teenager
The children get up and the parents get up
“Please those people who have abandoned this life come to me
Follow the song of birds and slowly move up”

Woods

A free state
No gates
No walls

Every evening
Flocks of birds return
To its welcoming arms

After a dreamy night
We see a white snake
Or a clear stream
Wriggle out leisurely
And enter the foggy world
That is brightening up
Second by second

Moring Fog

After gobbling up a dawn-announcing rooster
The hissing python leisurely slipped into
the deep woods
Spraying poisonous mist on its way

Right at this moment
Under the cover of smoke bombs
A group of bayonets are violating in turn
A tearful flower

At another corner
A bunch of pipe-smoking old men
Are plotting in secret on how to purchase
The virginity of the world

After inhaling a mouthful of soft, moist air
The poet standing at the top of a high-rise building
Exclaims in delight
“What a beautiful morning!”

Night Tr. by Tao Zhijian

A thermos bottle, an ashtray
To my mind bring a loving elder
He sipped the same tea each day
And lighted cigarettes against varying twilights

He quietly smoked on, never to put a word
And waited for the splendid starry lights
Or for the distant dawn, or maybe for nothing
Only he knew the bewilderment of night

Becoming silent, day by day
He closed his eyes at fall of night
He took not even a cigarette
A helpless twitch at corner of his mouth
Begot a thunder o’er the skies of night

Early Spring Day Tr. by Joan Xie

A fossilized she-beast seizes the water source.
By smell and low roar,
It teaches a honeysuckle tree to walk.

Spring is still rough and wild,
Its spell is cast by toxins settling in the viscera.
The claw-limbed pagoda tree rustles, groping
For its long-lost animality.

Residual snow resists hypnosis,
death like quicksilver,
Soupy mire decides the fate of travelers.
A light ray from afar, before being wasted,
Becomes a rose in my hand.

Tree Outside My Window

There is a tree, it stands
Outside my window. Every morning
When I wake up, I see it my first sight.
In the spring it calls for birds,
And beetles. Squirrels run up and down
It, occasionally silent.
It’s during those
Moments, I hear its soul.
Whispers, spit by the drop.
Its shade is forever green, dark
As the soil beneath.

But other times
It sings, with leaves,
And its gigantic branches.
It sings the strange tone, in the rain.
Rarely, it sings the same under the blue sky.
I understand its talks but I won’t tell.
I know what it wants me to
Hear, but I can’t repeat.

In the fall it turns the colors,
Gold as the heart, shiny
As butterflies.
The last one though, I was away –
I missed its season.
Whatever happened then,
It will never happen again.
When I returned,
Its leaves thick, and rambling
Through the hill, all the way into the creek
Below.

There is a tree standing outside
My window, and it calls now
To its end. I collect its remains,
Berries and all.
The next spring is near,
But the tree won’t wait.
Troy, the tree guy stands still,
He looks up, and says, this is a
BIG tree. It must have stood here for more than
300 years, and it will cost you five grands
To bring it down. At that moment,
I was thinking the last
Fall, when the tree
Was standing, right outside my window.

Imprint

I need, a long-lost color scheme
So the vision in black and white can be betrayed
The scent of flower dances in the cold
But it cannot whitewash the uneasiness unswayed

I need, a presumptuous loneliness
So the years past can breathe a helpless sigh
The weeping night endlessly stretches on
But can’t reach the shore behind
the cloud not so nearby

I need, an extremely unrestrained soul
So the memory can let the true sentiments ignite
The faded past confides with confusion
But it collapses when the world of reality reunite

Can’t peer through a night so thick
Does the debris of time still make me linger?
If I choose to say goodbye to destiny
Would the vaguely chanted rhythm
still try to hinder?

Stroll through the snow covered path of a forest
I can almost see the imprints
from winter to spring
How come then, the imprint
that I won’t easily forget
Has become a prayer flag that flutters in the wind?

The other side
beyond this curtain
lies a world it used to be
Indulge me for rewinding a moment
the innocent life of you and me

Our Wishes Tr. by Joan Xie

Talking about our wishes under the tree
You say, you will write a biography
of mountains and waters.

But I love only to take pictures of clouds
and paint a landscape from my window
(with several birds chirping)
or sketch a portrait of my little girl.

She must stand under the papaya treee
in our garden.

White moonlight Tr. by Sophy Chen

Night, quiet down
A ray of white moonlight through the window
Landed on the bed and integrated
with my thoughts
The man who wrote the poem for me, when I think
Of him, my heart warms up

I have always been respectful and grateful
Therefore, I often ignore the imagery of poetry
And more respect for the meaning of existence

Pleasure, anger, sorrow, joy,
all emotions are not important
That acquaintance is enough to comfort thin cool
Poetry, and writing poetry is an invisible force
They often accompany me
out of trough and despair

We are all silent people
Who are no longer the age of dreaming
And better understand the concept of gentlemen’s friendship light as water
Only the right distance has the beauty of horizon
This understanding and respect
is the most lasting value

Night, very quiet
Reading and writing poetry habitually
This is the favorite time I like
A ray of white moonlight ripples in my palm

Waiting for You by the Riverside of Years

The wind blows over autumnal brown
in its maturity
The bonfire burns love into red maple
to commend its purity
My zealous body is burning along with the leaves
That sublimates my soul
in nirvana which it believes.

I’m waiting for you,
while standing by the river of years
With vigorousness my stream of thought appears
Because I miss you and
I’m long for hearing from you
However, the river has brought me nothing new.
The birds are pecking this season,
That agonizes me without explainable reason.

An ox returning in the evening
is chewing and drinking
Water from the river,
The thirsty-quenching water
functions as an almsgiver
I keep on waiting
as a devoted shepherd boy does for his flock
And I have no mood for flute-playing ad hoc.

The compass of time revolves unceasingly
My mind is cast to a remote place
Where the birds perch and mutually embrace
Their thick feathers wrap my body and face.

In wind the water molecules evaporate
without residue,
Whereas the damp kiss of yours
will forever remain new
And the heart-touching sentiment will overflow.

Now I’m standing on the riverside
to wait for the next century,
Such patient doing constitutes
a part of my personal history.

Retrospective

The evening light of the past
overlapping the city of dreams
The orange reflection melts away
all recounts of tales.
At the turning point of your memory
ringing the evening drum and the twilight bell
shining upon the fresh old days.

No one cares about the past
or the people buried in history
Even if the weight of emotion suffocates
your subconscious
Even if it is forgotten in the storm of dust
The orange flowers withered
the faded ink in your book
I stand firmly
at the end of the tunnel
the other side of time
waiting for the last glimpse of life

Lost love

In a trance,
like waking up from a hangovere
in the Earlier Song Dynasty
Still messy in the old dream of the late Tang
Endure the follow-up headache hastily fled,
after thinking about a defeat

Leave the tenderness to the moonlight,
moonlight back to the river
Leave the love to the breeze,
the breeze returns to the forest, joy or mourning
Ask cloud to roll all the broken away

Just as in the story of others,
in the chaos of war,
with red eyes and fistful of tears
Can not afford a blow from ancient darkness,
when not stand firm

Retreat, meditate, rest, close eyes
Sigh…little by little, push love out of the heart
Having pale face,
somewhat feel relieved secretly over mind

One day

In the morning,
the sun scatters small pieces of gold leaves
And then one by one,
finds and takes them back, saves up in the twilight

Leisurely

Waiting for the moon to open the door,
gently lift the night yarn,
pour a sleeve of silver water,
sprinkle them in every corner

After dinner, grand time
Have to divide every second into a lot of segments,
slowly waste them
Drowsiness, picking over cold branches,
but not willing to fall into the rest

Wilderness Tr. by Hou Qiang

Who is in the wind
Leaving bold pen and ink
Between the solemn strokes
The vicissitudes of time

As if you saw someone
Wandering in the bounds of time
Lingering in love
Race alone against time

Work hard
Those inescapable sorrows
Deep loneliness in the wilderness

Strive to be an elegant cloud
The unforgettable pain
One by one in the wilderness of time

Hunter and the Prey

Silent, but not too quiet,
where is the target and who will pray for it?

Hey hunter, haven’t you
prepared to stalk and trap her ?
When those dark roses
opened up like Alladin’s cave.
A cave twisted, sharp spikes within

Hey Hunter, cant you catch up with her
teasing from an invisible foe?

Change, again and again
change your form,
When you adapt and chase it,
She can’t be captured, but will you ever know.

Hey hunter, who will be hunted do you dare say!
Do you know if you are really the prey!
She has followed your scent and
is following closely behind.
Now only her tracks you will find.

If you continue to play her vicous game,
Tears drop, a sleepless night in shame

April is a feeling

April maybe is
just a feeling
like me, just a scenery
you are passing by

A fleeting glimpse catches
touches of floating rhythms
like March’s peach petals
Only to be buried in the spring meadow

It is disheartening to see
the embryonic desert ripples
slowly withering away
before a blossoming chance

April is destined
to be a vulnerable time
I am only waiting quietly
for a season of drizzling sighs

Waiting for the April rain
falling all over the sky
I still want to bloom for you
even if just in a blink of glance

Living like a plant Tr. by Song Ming

The sunlight had slanted half its face
If you relaxed
The world would disappear under your nose

Yearning for you
Rose in a raining afternoon
I examined your sincerity through 365 degree
Like wisteria climbing to hold on some hopes

There was a jazz music in mind
From a special angle
I composed a poem with new rhyme
To clash with the snow fallen in June
That was the most classical tale in love

In butterfly’s dream
The smile of sea blue
Cast upon the wishes of a poet
The words of the primitive age
The myth of the blue porcelain that was transformed into plants
Were softly put into in my writing
I met you in the other route
The poems were absolutely shiny
By the time the lotus blooms
For tomorrow love is anticipated
I could see myself hereafter

April sky Tr. Zhang Qiong

Walking through the uncertainty of rain or shine
It needs a background color
To smooth something
Or better to set off something

The world is pink with peach blossomse
and green with willowse
You won’t have to color
Cause it’s already bustling
The universe is always quiet and deep
You won’t have to pry
Cause he will never tell

Purple is too cold
The world cannot bear her distant
Grey is too gloomy
The world cannot bear his weight
White is too vast
The world cannot hold its emptiness

I’ll do it in blue
People like her to hold the hand of the sea
Steady and sure, kind and gracious
Perhaps it also needs something deep
To exclude an impetuous
What it needs best perhaps is the clarity
A clean background for the world

Let’s add a few more white clouds
The moment the skirt dances against the wind
People’s hearts will also leap through time and space
In leisure time
It gives a little rest to a hasty step
In too much lovesickness
It carries a few spoony words to the person far away

Just her, blue and white
One is deep to be closed to
One is bright to be expected for
The April sky in the world

A Tree Tr. Sophy Chen

The bird flies far and the leaves have gone
The wind tells me: the cloud is the leaf
that the tree lifts to the sky

Again, the reeds are snowing,
and I read the autumn water
I want you to take me on a stroll
through the benchland of river
White crane alone,
you read me for my poem
I am not a poem, and just in my bones
There is the spinal cord of Tang and Song poems

The background is the Millennium Book of Songs,
The poet standing on the banks of the river
In the white dew of the frost, and I know
the leaves blown by the autumn wind
Are not the petals. Because of you,e
I look at leaves of this autumn as the flowers

Returning to the original place
of the Book of Songs, I planted a seedling
It grows in thousands of years in the winde
and rain, vicissitudes all fall but flowers are not old

Black and white

Wandering between black and white
From an extreme to the other
If I can be a little more gentle
I will change myself
Become what you want

But I would rather be in the dark
Rather be sinking into nothingness
As if I’ve never been here, as if
A poison needle hidden in the path of death
Let you close to the shade
Let you sink into nothing together

And when thing is done
I will return in void
In the pure vast emptiness
Even my flesh was shattered
And broken into pieces
I know you’d feel it still
In the distance, in the darkness
Perceiving my existence
My trembling with passions
Even none of us knows
From where this feeling comes
